ABU HAIDER, CHIBAYISH
ABU HAIDER, CHIBAYISH
“Chibayish is the gateway to the famous marshes of southern Iraq. People like Abu Haider - known as the Madan - have lived for millennia in the wetlands formed by the meeting of the great Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They subsist from fish, meagre crops and the milk of water buffalo that swim across the shallow streams in the morning. Their thatched longhouses called mudhifs are woven from the abundant marsh grass. Saddam Hussein drained the marshes to punish them in the 1990s but some of the areas has been restored in the years since the American invasion in 2003.”
