COLOURS OF QUTAB, AZERBAIJAN
“Halfway through our crossing of Azerbaijan’s Qobustan desert, we came across a family of herders who lived amongst the area’s towering mud volcanoes. A dilapidated Soviet-era car approached from some ramshackle lean-tos in the distance, and nine men and boys from the same family jumped out to great us, with some trepidation. An initially icy first interaction quickly melted with a few gestures and smiles and they invited us back to their camp for tea. One of their wives was making traditional qutab - stuffed flatbreads - on a hot drum oven, her colourful hijab contrasting with the mute palette of the adobe hut”
